She graduated as Valedictorian from her High School Class in Carroll County, and then set off to Atlanta to work at the telephone company as a switch board operator. Soon afterwards, she met her husband of 63 years and relocated to Cornelia. Sophie always loved fashion which led her to Manage Cato Department Store in Cornelia for several years. After her retirement she and her husband loved selling and purchasing antiques. They spent most of their weekends selling their finds at the Dillard Flea Market where they met and made lifelong friends. Mrs. Powers attended Hillside Baptist Church and was a Charter Member there. She was a Sunday School Teacher in her early days, and continued to attend until a couple of years ago due to failing health. She loved her Church and Church Family, and loved to sing the Baptist Hymns which she knew most of the words to. She was an avid reader. She read her Bible daily and left many notes in her Bible and her copy of Oswald Chamber’s “My Utmost for His Highest”. Her notes will be treasured for future generations.
