Obituary for Amanda Gwendolyn "Gwynne" Clark (Simmons)

Amanda Gwendolyn “Gwynne” Simmons Clark, age 86, of Baldwin, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

Born on September 3, 1936, in Baldwin, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Simmons and Bessie Broome Simmons. Gwynne attended Broad River School and South Habersham High School in 1954; at age 18 she went to work at Blue Bells in Homer. She worked there until she married in late 1958, then had her four children by 1965. In 1967, she became a single parent, being both mother and father to her children. She worked at Liquidation Mart in Cornelia and was one of the original employees that opened Sky City in Cornelia. She also took care of her mother who passed in 1982. This lead to her long career in private care. She retired to take care of her first great-granddaughter. She loved her family more than anything. Her children called her "Mama" and her grands called her "Granny". Mrs. Clark was a caregiver for 30 plus years and a homemaker, who enjoyed reading her Bible and being outdoors. Mrs. Clark loved canning, cross stitching, talking on the phone and visiting with her friends. Gwynne enjoyed watching NASCAR, her favorite driver was Jeff Gordon, and loved the Braves and Bobby Cox. Most of all, she loved her family and cooking meals for them. She was a member of Alto Baptist Church and the Women’s Missionary Union, and Leatherwood Baptist Church was her home church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Leroy Clark; brothers, Amos, Guy, Illious, and Edwin Simmons; granddaughter, Brandy Canup; son-in-law, Telford “Peanut” Hilland; and daughter-in-law, Beryle M. Clark.

Survivors include son, Alton Clark of Alto; daughters, Cathy Clark of Baldwin and Merle Clark of Alto; grandchildren and spouse: Mandy Moody (Jamie), David Clark, Bud Clark, Jake Clark, Dakota Clark, Debbie Moore, Melanie Blair, and Curtis Burrell; great grandchildren: Ryann Moody, Regann Moody, Colton Williams, and 24 more; 13 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Cathryne Rice of Cleveland; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2 pm until the service hour on Friday, October 14, 2022, at the funeral home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3 pm on Friday, October 14, 2022, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Dr. Harrill Millsap and Rev. Raymond Payne officiating. Interment will follow in Leatherwood Baptist Church Cemetery.
